Graphic Medicine

My past experience is the intersection of libraries and comics, and I was so happy to discover that there are others out there exploring the same thing in Medicine! I'll be putting interesting things I find in the field here if you want to check it out.

Three panels, one for each word: Frontline, Comics, Project. Underneath Frontline is a group of physicians covered in protective medical garb. There is a plus sign in between this panel and the next. The next panel features comics artists, old and young, women, men, featuring most prominently a black woman with glasses holding a pencil and sketchbook proudly. In between this and the next panel is an equal sign. The final panel, the project panel, features the finished comic book.

These stories from the COVID pandemic are collaborations between frontline workers and comic artists.

A pastel rainbow infinity symbol, the symbol of Autism Acceptance, with the words: Autism Acceptance Month.

Happy Autism Acceptance Month!

In 2011, the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) decided to move away from the medicalized and stigmatizing notion of Autism Awareness, which had been used to frame autistic people as burdens and did not speak for autistic people themselves, to Autism Acceptance, letting autistic people speak of their experiences, needs, and desires first and foremost, and to acknowledge that their differences are what make them an important and wonderful part of a beautiful, equitable world.

“Autism acceptance is seeing us as whole, complete human beings worthy of respect. Autism acceptance is recognizing that we are different and helping us learn to work within our individual patterns of strengths and weaknesses to become the best people we can be, not trying to transform us into someone we are not. Autism acceptance is remembering always that Autistic people are listening, including those who might appear not to be, and choosing to speak of autism and Autistic people in ways that presume competence and communicate value.” -The ABCs of Autism Acceptance by Sparrow Rose Jones.
